FIFA FUNDS

The international football association (FIFA) does more than just host World Cups - they invest serious amounts of cash into development programs and facilities around the world. But with great wealth comes the need for great mapping. Check out these maps that show what FIFA has been up to [scroll down the page to watch the vimeo video clips].

SANDBOX

This is the coolest little interactive mapping display idea I have seen in a while... It combines projection mapping, hydro-dynamic modelling, contours and a Kinect! This is such a great way to play around with complex flooding scenarios or the impact of landscaping alterations. However, this version which uses real sand (instead of thematic terrain) might just be more fun!

UNDERGROUND MAP MUSIC

I'm not sure what music you listen to on the radio, but I bet it probably isn't sweet sweet map music! Unless, of course... you're listening to Yuri Suzuki's fully functional circuit map-radio of the London Underground

WAR, WHAT IS IT GOOD FOR?

According to the song; it's good for absolutely nothing... uhh! - so why then, do we keep having wars with each other? Stupid humans!
Unfortunately, you'll probably think even less of us once you see all of history's conflicts in one place.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY

This interactive map created by the awesome folk at Stamen Designs reveals how the people living in several of southern California's cities perform against each other in terms of energy efficiency. The map uses great cartography to show metrics such as: electricity useage, driving distance and waste generation.

THE NAMING OF AMERICA

Ever wonder why America is called America - even though it was discovered by Christopher Columbus? Well, that's because it was actually named after Amerigo Vespucci - the man who made the first map of the continent! And what made Amerigo so special?... perhaps I'll let this 20 sec Family guy video clip explain.

MAGNETIC STATE

If you like topography and magnets you are not only awesome (because so do I!)... but you are also going to really enjoy these slick little memento's of American states. You can buy just one, but the packaging is so great you may just want to collect the entire set!

CAST IRON

I think its great that artist Alyssa Toninato's cast-iron map of america won the top spot in Martha Stewart's "American made" Awards - it showed that in our ever-changing world, we still value permanent / 'cast iron' conduits. Possibly though, it shows just how influential the pancake lobby group out there is!.. I hear Obama is a pancake man - just saying

GLASSY

Normally I try to post about maps that are clever or have ironic things going on...  this post however, is just about a whisky glass with a hand-etched map on it. That's just fine for me though, since I love whisky and can definitely imagine myself sipping from one of these bad boys. click here to view (or even purchase), some of the other American cities currently on offer.

MARBLE RUN

Remember that scene in Indian Jones and the Temple of Doom when Indy outruns that giant rolling stone?.. well, keep that in mind as you watch this fun little video of a marble rolling around the streets of 'google maps'.

Note: if you like this, you might also like my previous post: toothpick marble-run

WHAT THE FRAC?!

This image taken from Google Earth is part of a collection compiled by Paul Bourke that attempts to reveal the fractals of Earth. A 'fractal' if you don't already know; is a recurring pattern ie theoretically you can keep zooming in to an area, and it will be similar to the zoomed out area - which is great in mapping terms as we really only need to map the Earth at the highest level.. and just make up the rest!

GENERAL MAPPING

This rather regal looking chap is Stanislaw Maczek. Impressive medals right? Yep! However, even more impressive than this Polish tank general's military achievements though, is his efforts in constructing the world's largest outdoor relief map... of Scotland.

COLOUR ME BAD

Flickr as a paintbrush is a work-in-progress project that attempts to 'average' the colour of thousands of user uploaded photos to produce a map that visualises the colour vibe of an area. Click here for more details.

THE WAY TO A WOMAN'S HEART

Women are pretty easy to figure out, I don't know what all this confusion is about?!  D. W. Kellogg had them figured out in the 1830s, and even went so far as to create this map of a womans heart. Ok, so, possibly a little dated now, but it has such elegant old-school cartography that it makes up for any offence that it will probably cause.

JUST COZ

You know how there are some people that claim that when you die you leave a ghostly residual presence behind (?) - well, what if the same were true for your virtual 'life' in computer games?! For one thing, those spooky zeros could then be mapped to reveal where we live our lives - like in this map of Just Cause 2

OK LEGO GOODTIMES

Lego maps, we've seen them before - yes they're old news, but they're also still cool. This one is a map of Japan, created by 5,000 Japenese kids who usually only ever play digital games - so, kudos for this Lego Map effort right?!

LIVEHOOD

Defining the extent of a suburb is a tricky endeavour indeed - how does one draw a line in the sand; limiting the extent of a community?! Traditionally we think in terms of real-estate, but isn't it the behaviours' of the people within a particular area that really define it? Well, thats what Livehoods reckons anyway... they have applied a clustering algorithm to the 18 million 'check-ins' collected from the location-based social network foursquare

PRIMORDIAL SOUP

Live! Live my precious! Yes, you are small now.. but soon you will grow large enough to sustain rich life. A new world, a utopia will be created. In eons to come, generations will look back at this humble beginning and marvel at your vision.
You are a living map

ELEVATIONAL MUSIC

ipods and mp3 players are probably the dominant form of music playback today, but there is still most definitely a place for vinyl records. The tangible, almost visceral experience, produces a warm white-noise sound. Thats about all I can really say about this project that has substituted 'music' for the topography of Earth. When I listen to it; I imagine myself flying through space and encountering Earth as its spins.
what do you hear?

STAPLE SUPPLY

Some maps are good.
Some maps are useful.
Some maps are staples.
The city mapped out by artist Peter Wood is possibly only the latter, but it is a map none-the-less. You may also like to check out a couple of his other map-related projects: Plot and honey and almond

FUNKY FRESH SHAPES

These wacky shapes may only seem like wacky shapes but believe it or not, they are actually the zoomed in selections of the Fresh Prince of Bell Air's shirts... or abstractions of world city maps by the artist Lu Xinjian. Whatever.

PLUCKING GOOD MAP

The noises synonomous with subway transport are usually a collection of cacaphonic screeching and rumbling. However, the recomposed avant-garde soundscape of New York artist Alexander Chen provides a welcome reimagining. His soundscape is produced by 'plucking' different lines on his map. The notes are determined by the length of the line. It almost soothes ones imagining of the whole transport system. click here to look and listen

PRISON BREAK

Did you know that 2.3 million people in the USA alone, are in prison! Collectively, this represents not only a substantial challenge to law-enforcement officials, but also land-use planners. After all, all those inmates still require the same infrastructure that any 'normal' suburb requires, yet in a location that is annexed well away from the usual easy provision of said services. This collection of google map's aerial images of Prisons in America does make one wonder if perhaps this whole system isn't just a little dis functional?

NAILED IT

Hot tip ladies; apparently all you need to do to achieve this look is paint your nails white, then soak your fingers in alcohol for 5 mins (I know right, soaking your mouth in gin for a few hours sounds way better, but...) hold them against a map or newspaper etc to transfer the image onto your nails, coat them in a clear protectant and voila - instant glamour!.. so I've been told

LICHEN THIS

Whilst Florent Morellet's mapping of the micro worlds around (such as lichen spread) may seem inconsequential, fractal theory maintains that his work may just be valuable for modelling larger patterns eg human population spread on islands. Perhaps the words of mother Teressa may help convince you here; Don't look for big things, just do small things with great love...

UNIFIED MAP OF EVERYTHING

There is a lot of stuff in the universe yet most maps seem only to deal with things at the scale of streets, cities or countries. Rarely do we consider how, for example, mountains actually have an atomic structure or indeed a spatial position relative to our galaxy. Like a game of 3D chess, the tricky bit in considering ones relative place in the universe is  actually visualising all the scales of the universe?!

STICK FIGURES

Are you one of those people who when you get asked to draw a person; you inevitably draw a stick-figure?  The experience can be rather humiliating. The maps of Greg Coulson approach a similar level of simplicity, yet somehow evoke a more skilled construction. Perhaps the use of draftsman's rulers instead of 'sticks' or the lofty pursuit of the map, elevates that ostensibly 'novice' attempt. Whatever the reason; I like these stick maps - they are good.

BEFORE AND AFTER

So, you wake up late one night and you can't get back to sleep. You turn on your TV in the hope that it will anaesthetise you. Cruelly, the only thing on at that hour is infomercials. At first, the ab-flex pro seems like a ridiculous idea, but after 5 minutes of zombie-like consideration of the before-and-after photos, you're like 'well, maybe I could do with some rock hard abs!'. Brain washing works, so why not utilise this idea to wake people up to land management issues? Check out these interactive before and after land use map images.

MAP-O-PHILE

Despite this particular work being entitled Flat File Globes and looking pretty much identical to an old-school map filing cabinet, it is according to the artist; actually, a metaphor for the human body and consecutive time-streams! No, I have no idea what that means either, but Noriko Ambe's topographic forms carved out of paper are quite intriguing and do somehow evoke a perception of glacial time unfurling

8-BIT IS BACK

I hate to be blunt, but if you're reading a blog about mapping, then you're also probably interested in fantasy games & novels, and you are therefore my friend, a nerd - Nerd! So instead of denying the truth, you might as well click on the latest April fools day stunt by the good people at google maps... similar to a previous Choice map post a few years back called retro get it yo, google has gone and turned our world into an 8-bit fantasy quest. Nerd!

CIUDAD NAZCA

If (like me) you find yourself fascinated by the mysterious Nazca Lines in Peru, or perhaps you enjoyed the imaginary 'set' construction within the excellent movie Dogville, or if you're some weird Choice Map Tuesday fan who has actually read my other posts: castles made of sand or the mysterious sliding rocks of the racetrack Playa (?), then this post's for you!!! If not, well to be honest then I got nothing for ya and you're not welcome here anyway!... just joking, I desperately need you to watch this video of a 1:1 scale imaginary city mapped-out in the middle of nowhere.

WISDOM OF THE WIND

Generations come and generations go, but the earth remains forever. The sun rises and the sun sets, and hurries back to where it rises. The wind blows to the south then it turns to the north; round and round it goes, ever returning on its course. All things are wearisome, more than one can say. All the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, like chasing after the wind
- Ecclesiastes 4:14

WATER-COLOUR COOLNESS

Most people are probably familiar with the water-colour paintings of Monet or Kandinsky and assume that this style is no longer relevant to us in this day-and-age, but then again most people are idiots, and aren’t familiar with Stamen designs. Stamen (pronounced in a similar way to ‘Newman’ of Seinfeld) are always doing such cool things, that they make us fellow map-makers jealous. One such work is this dynamic water-colour world-map. "Stamen!"
If you're actually interested in this (?), here's how they did it... water-colour and texture.

MIDNIGHT IN PARIS

Ah, gay Paree, you beguiling city you - your irresistible cobbled streets, smokey bars and red wine indulgences flood the romance of our hearts like subway stations filling with people - each stop; another dream, another twinkling star, another delicacy in a moveable feast. Gaze here my friends at the celestial city

WHITE MEN CAN'T MAP

As the wolf will lie down with the lamb, so too will the jock lie down with the nerd. In this week's post, the shooting positions of basketball's NBA superstars are deconstructed by a geeky b-ball fanatic. What we see are not only visually satisfying images, but also, I think we see mainstream acceptance of how mapping can be used to unlock spatial potential, and literally change the shape of the game.  click here to view

BIT OF A STRETCH

Let us my friend, consider the intriguing case of 'art imitating life... imitating art' - what the hell? Well, first came the City of London (with all it's multitude of tubes and buses), and then came the tube-map of London (which took stylistic liberties with spatial accuracy for the 'good' of representational comprehension) and then along comes this street-map based on the tube map (which turns the whole thing on its head). Phew, maybe just click this link and let the people who made it, explain it better.

WON'T YOU TAKE ME TO A FUNKY TOWN

Warning, read no further if you think you may have any reason at all to regret a bleary-eyed ruckus karaoke night (this means you!); orientating yourself with this map (which replaces street names with song titles) will probably cause you to sing the song over in your head, and thus recall those awful sessions that time and alcohol had mercifully repressed for you.

ZOOM IN AND ENHANCE

Look away from this geographical phenomenon if you can, but the chances are you're not even reading this. It's a shame, because I was going to tell you exactly where in the world this is located.  Yes, captured here is the recorded process of zooming in upon an actual location in google earth - some say this particular location is the gateway to Hell, others ponder the fractal nature of our universe - as a map maker though it presents an intriguing situation where every map of the area is always at the perfect scale.

DARK SIDE OF THE MOON

There are some folk who think that Man never landed on the moon in 1969. The conspiracy theorists look at the footage of the fluttering flag, or they look at the shadows on the rocks and they say; 'no way!'. Strangely enough though, there has never been any address by those theorists of these awesome maps of the far side of the moon - perhaps because they offer incontrovertible proof of a moon landing?! Put simply, there is no way to fake this lava-lamp palette of browns and oranges (ie you would need to be a child of the age) and have it be spatially accurate (ie posses modern satellite technology). Get your printers ready people, you'll be wanting prints of the pdfs for your wall.

14 February 2012

SPLISH SPLASH

Reminiscent of a Jackson Pollock painting, this world-map seems to present a fluid, colourful, boundary-less, almost; happy world. Pollock in his efforts wanted an end to the viewer's search for representational elements in his paintings, and wrote that "what was to go on the canvas was not a picture but an event. The gesture on the canvas was a gesture of liberation from value — political, aesthetic, moral." Hmmm, that's pretty deep for some messy paint splatters, but if you like this, you can purchase your own image on canvas  and ponder its greater meaning.

BABY YOU'RE A FIREWORK

Who doesn't love fireworks night?! The Roman Candles and the screaming Sky-Rockets in flight (afternoon delight) are pretty cool, but secretly; the 'lame' sparkler is really our favourite - you can spell out your name or draw a picture or even... create a map. This particular instance is just a piece of corporate art that you can buy from a soulless Internet retailer, however, don't let that ruin the idea of a sparkler map - it represents the fluid, transient nature of the stuff on a map. Other maps in comparison, just seem so static and dated.

MONDRIAN PROJECTION

It's not often that I'll display a creative work up-for-sale, that is so blatantly a knock-off of another artist ie 'Mondrian', but since he never actually painted a map we'll have to settle for this interpretation of his 'plastic' style. Mondrian defined his art as a grid of horizontal and vertical lines that ignored the particulars of appearance - but for us map-makers it's a neat way of portraying information without (cringe) wanting to seem too accurate.

An intriguing technique used in Mondrian's original paintings was that the white-forms were painted in sections (not simply as a first-layer background), using brush strokes running in different directions - generating a greater sense of depth in the white-forms, as though they are overwhelming the lines and the colors.

NEON AESTHETIC

Ahh the 1980s, so many awesome things came out of that era: fluorescent Lycra, Tetris, Star Wars, Cosby sweaters - who could hate such an apperceptive zeitgeist?! Ergo, who could hate a modern-day map that strips back twenty odd years of design 'advances', and brings back that low-fi wild-side?! Oh yeah, take me back to the future... with this map of Manhattan Island, New York.

17 January 2012

HIT THE ROAD

It's not immediately obvious, but a good book can be considered to be something of a spatial journey; our minds leave our bodies, and we gradually get transported to somewhere else. Character-development, sentence-structure, plot etc subsequently become hills and valleys along an imaginative path. Logically then, if someone wanted a review of a book; rather than read a laborious textual review, perhaps they would be better directed to look at a map and drink in the visual patterns all at once?! For example, are you considering reading Jack Kerouac's novel On the Road? Well, perhaps the beautiful maps of Stefanie Posavec can guide you to a decision!

EVERYTHING HERE IS WONDERFUL

We may exist in the cities and towns of a civilised society but the wilderness is always calling to us - challenging us to truly live, to be free. Imagine yourself wandering off into the woods with only the bare essentials; your wits and good equipment. Man versus nature, survival versus destruction. The quality axe-manufacturer Best Made are aware of this tension and remind us with their maps; outside of our cages is a wonderful world

CASTLES MADE OF SAND

Creating public art-works represents lots of challenges: Will the public understand it? Will it be salient years down the track? and possibly most importantly; will it survive continued vandalism? Let us applaud then this map roller triumph created by Carl Cheng in 1988! The 14 tonne concrete roller was cast with an inverted relief of a Los Angeles city block, including cars and buildings. Periodically it is rolled out onto the beach and leaves behind a positive relief in the sand ~~~ to be washed away by the inexorable tides.
